The Flipsides Of Solar Air Conditioner

Although solar air conditioners are renewable means of heating your house, they have many disadvantages. If you are really concerned about the environment and looking for a renewable means of cooling your house, you have many other options hand. There are air-source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps etc. Know the pros and cons of solar air conditioner before opting for them.

High Cost

The cost of buying and installing solar air condition is fat investment. Buying and installing the whole system contains solar panels, the invertor to convert DC into AC current, the air conditioner device will amount to a huge cost. Usually, 15 to 20 solar panels are necessary to create adequate electricity to deliver power to a moderate-sized home. The larger the panels, the more electricity can be produced. Yet acquiring larger solar panels increases costs as well. You also need to consider the costly battery reserve. Batteries are expensive, require maintenance, and don't last very long. Solar panels are also vulnerable to damage by hail storms or falling tree limbs. They are quite expensive to replace.

Weather-dependent

Solar air conditioners as evident from the name depend on sun’s energy which powers them. And weather on any day is unpredictable. You may have cloudy skies for days at a stretch. The panels will be unable to soak enough sunlight and you will not get enough cooling from your solar A/c. You will require battery back up to manage in such situations. The batteries will store solar power and use it to power your A/c on cloudy days. But in areas where rain and cloudy weather is frequent, solar A/cs are not viable options.

Efficiency

The efficiency of solar air conditioner depends on the placement of solar panels. These need to be directed towards the sun to allow them absorb maximum energy. Therefore you will need to change their orientation every month to enable them to track the sun. This is not feasible task. Consequently houses equipped with solar air conditioners don’t us energy optimally. Installing the panels is also a critical task which will need an expert hand. Many calculations are carried out to determine a good location for the panels and also their angle of tilt. Getting an expert hand is not easy. Installing these units on the roof also causes lots of damage to the roof surface.

Cleaning

Cleaning the solar panels is another hassle. Ideally they are placed on roofs to allow them highest exposure to sun. But in areas where it often snows, the panels tend to get covered with sleet. They also become dusty in dry and sandy regions. They often get strewn with dry leaves. Cleaning them, if mounted on roof is a difficult task. Cleaning needs only wiping them with water combined with mild soap. It is better to place your panels on the ground, mounted to racks or poles. Although the fact remains that sun’s rays are better soaked on the roof.

Produces DC current

Solar panels can give you DC power. The DC power has to be converted in AC before being used to power the air conditioner. Most systems now have the ability to convert DC power to AC. In this regards you should know that if your solar power system is producing additional power than needed by your house, you can send the excess power to the power grid. You will earn credit due to this. Sometimes when the system is not able to produce enough electricity, you can turn the utility grid to meet power demand of the house. All you need for such an arrangement is a power connection from a utility company. The amount of power you are consuming from the grid and how much of surfeit power you are giving out to the grid can be regulated by net metering device.
